It stands to reason that a tropical island paradise like Cozumel which enjoys over 4 million visitors annually would have its share of restaurants to boast about. As the number of high end, commercial eating establishments continues to grow, Cozumel is very fortunate in that the majority of its restaurants are not franchised or company owned but instead are entrepreneurial efforts where multiple generations of an entire family participate.
 Enjoying a meal at one of these family operated restaurants is literally like being invited into their home to sample the delicious flavors enjoyed by their household. And with many people relocating to Cozumel now from various parts of Mexico like Oxaca and Michoacan, there are restaurants that prepare traditional Mexican food with regional flair completely different from the Yucatan flavors found in this area.
Those adventurous travelers who have wandered back into the regular neighborhoods of Cozumel will see that there is at least one eatery in every city block and often times 2 or three. Up until just a few years ago, the most common way of getting around the island was by walking or bike. In addition, many households did not have refrigerators or alot of room to store foodstuffs. Since folks didn't want to go far for groceries and welcomed the opportunity not to have to cook a meal several times a day, corner markets and neighborhood eateries became plentiful and inexpensive.
We've often heard it said upon taking an island visitor to a neighborhood eatery: "Gosh, this place would make a fortune if it were just located downtown." The truth is, the eatery was not initially established for tourists but rather by a family wanting to serve a neighborhood. If a tourist or two happens to find these places then that's a bonus to these entrepreneurs. It is only by good luck that we find these quality establishments scattered throughout our city.
 Island visitors will find countless restaurants along the waterfront and throughout downtown San Miguel and many of these are listed here. However, in the spirit of supporting a long stand element of this island culture, COZUMELINSIDER has also elected to also seek out and present some of the lesser-known, predominantly family-owned places that first-time visitors might otherwise miss.

A number of island restauranteurs give taxi drivers a commission for every customer they bring to their business. This has resulted in some drivers telling visitors that the restaurant they are requesting is closed, that the food is not good, or just generally insisting that they go where the driver wants to take them. We suggest that you print out our restaurant information and bring it along, so you can give the taxi driver the correct address and there will be no confusion about where you want to go.

No question there are a lot of restaurants in Cozumel and so many in fact that it takes several trips to the island just to scratch the surface of our island dining possibilities! But every traveler has to put a visit to at least one (1) of Alberto's three (3) restaurants on their list to give a try ~ especially if it's seafood you're after because their own fishermen provide the catch!
Cozumel seafood is some of the freshest in the entire country of Mexico and Alberto's Restaurant is an excellent choice for sampling the flavors of the sea with a Caribbean and Yucatecan flair!  |

Now with two locations in Cozumel Chi restaurant provides a comfortable and modern venue for its excellent Asian fusion cuisine. The original downtown location opens Sundays with it's incredible LUNCH BUFFET which features a nice variety of their regular menu items offered during the week. The Sunday buffet is around $150 pesos and the price includes a beverage.
If not interested in the buffet, guests can choose from over 200 items on the menu featuring an assortment of tastes from all around Asia including Thai and sushi. Those looking for something more exotic in taste, the Chi chefs are from Hong Kong, China and Thailand so they can prepare a variety of dishes that are not even listed on the regular menu. Whether dining inside in the comfortable climate controlled dining room or outside on the patio or garden guests will enjoy a magnificent view of Puerta Maya, the ships and the ocean.
With such an extensive menu, we encourage you to order several different dishes and share amongst a group so everyone can sample the many different flavors of Asia!
The downtown location has an excellent upstairs vantage point for viewing the Carnaval parades each year but you must reserve tables a day or two in advance. Well worth the trouble though and incredible food to top it off! |

If you are a carnivore at heart, you will be in heaven here at Fogo do Brasil Churrascaria (Steak House)! Located on the SE corner of Melgar and Calle 3 Sur on the 2nd floor, you will find a wide variety of menu options of many different selections of meats While the name is definitely something many are familiar with for all types of meats, they are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and feature a very extensive menu with many types of entrees to choose from.
However, if you are looking for a nice night out, are a big meat lover, then this is definitely a treat for dinner. You start off with an appetizer and the salad bar buffet (but don't fill up, the best is yet to come). You will then be tempted by all types of meats that are on skewers that they bring tableside. Beef, pork, chicken, seafood, etc. You can also just order specific entrees off their menu if you do not want the full "carnivore" experience.
Fogo do Brasil also has a full bar (including wine and beer) so you have everything you need for a nice dinner out when visiting the island! Very friendly management and staff also! |

The Hard Rock Café offers the best rock and the best food with live music, restaurant, bar and boutique. Located in the Park Royal Village Shopping Center, just across from the TMM/SSA International Pier, it's a fantastic place to go and watch the sunset, grab a nice snack or meal and have a cool, refreshing cocktail! Ideally located in the heart of downtown on the beachfront and across from the ferry pier, this restaurant offers a spectacular ocean view and is very handy if traveling to/from Playa on the ferry. One can purchase ferry tickets and then sit back for a cup of coffee and breakfast here right up until just a couple of minutes before the ferry departs.
The wait staff have all worked here for years so the service is excellent and the menu offers a variety of Mexican platters and American food for all three meals. One might consider this the Cozumel version of "Denny's" in the USA with very delicious food! |

The Restaurante del Museo Cozumel is an incredible beachfront place to enjoy while sitting on the 2nd floor balcony of the museum overlooking the beautiful downtown bay area. In the Fall of 2012, new management took over and revamped the menu and extended the operating hours to provide breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Enjoy wonderful traditional Mexican selections, tasty fresh Seafood and American-style choices and wonderful beverages. They are also vegetarian friendly.

The serve the best Certified Angus beef offering a great selection of beef cuts, salads and appetizers, all grilled perfectly to your specific taste requirements.

This rustic, small, yet very charming restaurant located a few blocks off downtown in the space formerly of La Lobsteria and is in a quaint setting inside a Mayan house, circa 1864 They have a very laid back atmosphere with soft, live music and you can enjoy your meal by candlelight under a palapa covered roof on a small terrace.
The Italian and Mexican (lots of seafood) dishes are INCREDIBLE and have been receiving rave reviews. Try the seafood platter, fresh crab (whole) and of course, LOBSTER (served with butter and garlic sauce). Other favorites are the lobster bisque (quite possibly the best you will ever experience), lobster tacos and there are some very nice desserts to end your night (flan and coconut ice cream are favs). The portions are quite generous, the prices are quite reasonable and the staff so very friendly. Well worth the visit! |

Opened in August of 2015, the new Diez Con Quince Cozumel restaurant took over the space/spot of the former La Tienda Guido's Delicatessen! It has a very open feel with an incredible courtyard with covered patio (with very nice ceiling fans) open to our fresh air and also additional uncovered seating (if you want to keep working on that Caribbean tan)! The food and staff at this place are simply AWESOME and you will find the same staff here year after year just waiting for you and other old friends to return! Incredible "FRESH" seafood is the specialty and breakfasts are sooooo YUMMY! Food is always consistent, very appetizing and the presentation is GREAT! And the service as mentioned is always top notch and friendly! My favorites are the mole enchiladas and their ceviche ~ because it's so fresh and tangy. Oh... and the Huevos Motulenos and Huevos Gerardo are the best way to start off a wonderful day in Cozumel!!! |

After serving in the kitchen of one of Cozumel's finest Italian restaurants for several years, this fabulous young chef, Kristopher Wallenta, decided to try it on his own. And each season his following gets bigger and bigger and tables are hard to come by in prime dinner hours.

La Candela also serves great lunch specials that change every day. All this including a "flavored water" beverage is included in the lunch special for one low price where two people can typically spend less than US $10 - $12.

Formerly the location of Prima's, the reviews are in and the new La Terreza Cozumel Restaurant is GREAT! It opened in November of 2011 and has fast gained a reputation for the pasta, pizza and seafood entrees (they do take reservations, which we recommend). The prices are quite reasonable and the portion sizes are very generous. All the pasta and breads are made in-house so they are always very fresh. And the garlic bread they serve is REALLY good - and they have basalmic vinegar and olive oil to dip the bread in - my favorite! Service is excellent, staff is very friendly and it is great to sit on the patio balcony and enjoy a deliciously prepared meal! Oh - don't forget to save room for dessert - the coconut cream pie is to die for ~ WHEN available! |

Owners Camilo Santo and Alredo Parida both come from a long line of fishermen and restaurant owners. Established in 2003, they quickly became a favorite among the locals. Sometimes you will even catch the competition eating here. They are proud to offer quality seafood in their dishes. This is the place for seafood lovers. The fish is fresh and the shrimp are jumbo!
While I was there, I overheard a tourist say, "I can't talk right now. The food is too good." Most people in the morning will drop in for fish tacos or sandwiches. "Chilango's Taqueria" - Huge Portions - You Won't Leave Here Hungry!
This family-owned business has been around for many years and continues to be one of the few places on the island where you can find huaraches. They feature handmade tortillas which are made and cooked at the counter right in front of you and essentially offer two menu choices: Quesadillas or Huaraches.
Simply put, huaraches are open faced tortillas smeared with beans plus the meat/veggie topping that you select while quesadillas are tortillas folded over cheese and the meat/veggie topping picked. Choose your meat or vegetable ingredients from the fresh daily selection housed behind the glass case at the kitchen counter.
If you need some suggestions, we recommend starting out with a nopales quesadilla (yes, we mean cactus) and a papas (smashed potatoes) quesadilla.
Don't forget to act like a local and eat the awesome green salsa offered on the table and try their tasty "Agua de Jamaica" to drink! |

Diego's Tacos Cozumel is a family run restaurant that specializes in serving wonderful Mexican/Yucatan meals. The "Red Tent" is clearly visible outside the entrance to Cozumel Airport and has always been family run and owned. If you want your first meal after flying into the island to be a unique and memorable experience, we recommend you stop and grab a quick bite either upon arrival or departing Cozumel!
They are obviously known for their authentic tacos and also have many other traditional fare selections such as burritos, fajitas, enchiladas, lime soup, quesadillas, fresh guacamole and if you arrive early, their breakfast tacos and egg dishes are SPECTACULAR! As they say at Diego's, their goal is to turn customers into friends because they love what they do and you can definitely "taste" the love!

Rodolfo "El Moro" Chacon and his sons have been serving tourists and locals alike since 1980 and despite being a long way from the waterfront, El Moro remains a popular destination for island newcomers as well as frequent visitors. El Moro is continued proof that a tourist zone location is not a requisite for success. When it comes to good food ~ folks will find you!
El Moro offers an extensive menu with traditional Mexican platters prepared Yucatecan style and featuring several different mole sauces. They also offer an excellent seafood platter called the Zacarias Special, however we love to order the "fish in paper" or "shrimp in wires" (shrimp-kebob) from the English side of the menu. There is also a kids section of the menu and hamburgers for those not wanting to sample the local cuisines.
If you stop in on a Saturday or Sunday, you'll generally find them cooking up some cochinita pibil or one of their other Yucatecan specialties. This spot is famous for always serving their guests an extra dish "on the house," and we give them an extra star for being one of the friendliest places we've come across yet. |

A locals favorite, this family operated establishment prepares a variety of lunch plates typical of this region. From seafood to breaded pork, this is Cozumel style home cooking at its best! Daily specials are offered on the chalkboard. All lunches include a bowl of soup and one (1) of their "flavored water" drinks. We recommend that instead of the pasta soup you tell them you would prefer beans and rice [frijoles con arroz] and try the Jamaica [ha-may-ka] flavored water made from flower petals.
A great thing to order if you feel like splurging is the shrimp brochette as they really know how to grill it!!

This is definitely a favorite of ours here in Cozumel! They really know how to do cochinita pabil (roast pig) like no other place in town! Our favorite to order is the pork sandwich (torta) special (torta de cochinita PURO CARNE porfavor). You will be able to watch them pull the meat right off the pit baked pig. They then grill it with onions and put it on the torta (a big bun). They have a number of very tasty (with a bit of a kick) sauces, we like the orange chipolte pepper salsa (not hot really, just a bit of spice) or the green habanero salsa for those of you like a BIG kick! We will often order extra to take home (don't forget to get extra salsa to take with you), put in the refrigerator and then pop in the microwave for a late night snack! Seriously, KILLER pork sandwiches!

Los Sera's is simply an island staple among locals for tacos, tortas and pizza! Tacos don't get much better than these! The take out business forms a line every night while the restaurant is always full as well. Sera's is a big hit with the late night crowd since it's about the only place open with food after the bars and dance clubs close.
Sera's offers a wide variety of pizza, too! The pizza area is a separate kitchen and service area which serves up "locals style" pizzas (this is NOT Domino's OK!) Excellent selection of table salsas here too including one incredible guacamole habanero mix not found anywhere else that is totally addictive!
The meat servings on each taco are large so order tacos with "double tortilla." It costs only a couple of pesos more but this way an order of 2 tacos really becomes 4 smaller ones with room to try the incredibly tasty salsas! |

Mission Parilla is hands down the best value and quality "local style" food in Cozumel. Relocated in the Fall of 2014 but still located in the mid-town area, this is a popular restaurant for those island adventurers who tend to stay off the beaten path. Parilla has the most economical plate breakfasts and lunches on the island so the place is always filled with locals. Their dinner menu is economical but includes everything from chile relleno to shrimp shish-kabobs and more!
Parilla earned even more respect here on the island in 2005 after hurricane Wilma as literally it was the only place open and serving food to the public for weeks. While stories of gouging and profit taking in other stores were all around, Mission Parilla prices and service remained the same. This restaurant also took on the responsibility of feeding the hundreds of electrical workers that were brought in from the mainland to restore power to the island. All the while, service never faltered for locals at Parilla.

Be brave and adventurous and give this spot a try. Rather than selling what he catches to local restaurants, this enterprising fisherman established his own eatery where customers can select from his catch of the day. The filetes empanizado (battered fried fish) is by far the best on the island. Try the seafood soup or the ceviche, which is mixed seafood in salsa. If you're really hungry, check out Carlos' whole fried fish.
Initially this was a "to go" or "take out" place only but now the restarurant area in back has been expanded to serve his growing base of loyal customers.

Super Taqueria "El Pique" is a popular taco place for locals and many tourists are fast becoming fans of their variety of tacos. No paper menus ~ just see the wall ~ and no silverware either! Just a no frills, authentic taco stand that also features fajitas, queso, fresh salsa and platos. You also have to try the bean soup which is a house specialty and they offer a nice selection of ice cold beverages to top off the meal. The service is also VERY good and you can enjoy your meal either inside or outside on the patio!
For those more adventurous souls, this is one of the best places to get a variety of tacos featuring the "other meats" like tripa, stomach, brains, etc. and these are all also very delicious! |

Taqueria El Cameron Dorado seafood restaurant is a very popular spot for locals to be able to do just that ~ eat and go! With quick, effortless service, guests get in, get out and on with their day while being able to eat some of the freshest seafood available on the island. This restaurant has a complete menu of seafood to choose from although most locals just order tacos. In addition to excellent seafood, the menu offers eggs and breakfast fare as well as pork and beef dishes as well for those wanting a different taste for the day. Everything is cooked fresh daily and salsas are whipped up fresh every few hours. They even make and bottle their own beverages here as well.
Given its location right on the transversal highway to the other side, this Cozumel seafood restaurant makes a great stop before or after a spin around the island.
Order at least 3 shrimp tacos and a Coca Cola to get started. The MUST HAVE item here is the dark green, roasted habanero salsa. Another island tradition for that trip to the other side of the island or for a quick easy party gathering. Being from Sinaloa, which is farther north in Mexico and close to the Texas border, the flavor of this roasted chicken is very similar to the taste created in USA chicken roatisseries. Pure, simple flavor of the wood not obliterated by lots of other spices. These whole roasted chickens are so good and so economically priced, it's difficult to justify cooking at all!

This is another fun beach club with some of the most stunning views on the north west coast of the island! Located just north of Avenida Antonio Gonzales Fernandez (Airport Road) off Rafael E. Melgar located on the Playa Las Casita Beach that is directly across from the military base!
The main dining area has incredible views from the 2nd floor of the restaurant with additional seating available on the beach front under the main dining areas! This is a very popular spot for a quick snack and a nice alcoholic beverage to watch all the gorgeous Caribbean waters! Multi-cuisine with a focus on Mexican, but for those kids wanting a burger and fries, you can get that here also!
