Father's Day |
|
Like Mothers' Day and Children's Day in Mexico, Fathers' Day (Día del Padre) is a family-centric observance. Cards, chocolates, artwork, t-shirts, and other presents are given to fathers and father-like role models on this day. Father's Day community activities, including fun runs, are held in some cities. One (1) tradition that sets the holiday apart is the twenty-one (21) kilometer race held in Mexico City. The "Carrera Día del Padre 21K Bosque de Tlalpan" gives fathers and children a way of spending time together outdoors along with thousands of others taking part in the annual festivities. Leading up to Father's Day, many schools have special events, such as pot-luck lunches, hand-made artwork on display, children singing songs, or school plays.
The modern Fathers' Day origin is believed to have come from the U.S. Some say it was first celebrated in Washington on June 19, 1910, while others believe it was celebrated in West Virginia on July 5, 1908. Regardless, the popularity of Fathers' Day has spread to countries such as Mexico. There are some suggestions that the idea of Father's Day may stem from the pagan sun worship. Some branches of paganism see the sun as the father of the universe. The June solstice occurs around the same time of year as Father's Day so some people see a link between the two (2). The Mexican people not only honor their fathers on the third Sunday in June every year, but they also look to father-like figures. For example, they honor grandfathers, step-fathers, big brothers, and other important men in their lives.
Fathers' Day is an observance and not a federal public holiday in Mexico. Just like almost every other festival and holiday that is celebrated in Mexico, food has an important role in the celebration of Father's Day. Early in the morning there is an enormous meal prepared that includes all of Dad's favorite foods. Cooking can start early in the morning and when everything is done, everyone sits down to enjoy the day with food and drink. And you can't forget about dessert! The meal is finished off with Mexican chocolates or the traditional dessert of Pan Dulce. Pan Dulce is sweet bread with delicious toppings.
