Cozumel to Cancun Whale Shark Snorkel Day Trip |
|
Guests staying in Cozumel will enjoy this once in a lifetime opportunity to snorkel with whale sharks, the gentle giants of the sea, as an excellent day trip off the island. Guests staying in Playa del Carmen, Tulum or any resort along the coast along the way to Cancun can also be picked up and participate in this Cancun Whale Shark Adventure.
The Cancun Whale Shark Snorkel Adventure will have you travel to the mainland from Cozumel via ferry to a designated spot at the Playa del Carmen ferry to meet your transportation guide for the ride to the marina in Cancun. Again, If you are already on the mainland along the Riviera Maya, guests will be picked up at their hotel, resort, etc. (if you are along the coast from Tulum to Cancun). All guests will ride in a comfortable air conditioned van/shuttle to a beautiful Cancun marina and harbor where a breakfast reception (coffee, juice, sweet breads, cookies and bottled water) will be awaiting you before you depart on your ocean adventure. Participants will then board a 32 foot snorkel boat that is equipped with a small bathroom and shade to begin your journey to search for the world's biggest fish - the whale shark! The boat will travel out into our beautiful Caribbean waters around Isla Mujeres to find the whale sharks for your snorkel adventure.
Once whale sharks are sited, participants will enter the water two (2) at a time to snorkel while others view the interaction from the surface. Each group of two (2) will enter the water and snorkel three (3) different times. After about 2-2.5 hours of snorkeling and viewing the whale sharks and taking pictures, the boat will begin the journey back toward the Cancun harbor. You will be provided snacks and drinks (sandwiches, traditional ceviche, water and soft drinks) as you head back from your incredible experience swimming with these incredibly docile marine animals. When you arrive at the marina, you will find your van/shuttle awaiting to return you to the Playa del Carmen pier where you will catch the ferry back to Cozumel (or again, if staying along the Riviera Maya you will be dropped off at your hotel or resort).
Some additional information about the whale sharks that are known as "Dominoes" to the local fishermen in this region because of the coloring of their skin, these giant whale sharks can exceed forty (40) feet in length. They migrate to this area of the Yucatan peninsula to feed in the abundant plankton filled water and play with their off-spring. Since plankton thrives near the surface of the sea, whale sharks glide along with their dorsal fin and tail out of the water as they take in as much plankton food as they possibly can. An incredible sight to behold in the pristine waters well north of Isla Mujeres and Isla Contoy, snorkelers are treated to a thrilling experience.
Again, this migration phenomenon only occurs in this region during the summer months of June - September as the whale sharks continue on their annual migratory path. While not guaranteed, quite often there will also be schooling mantas and schooling cownose rays in these same waters for snorkelers to see.
