A Personal Note from Sherri "10 Year Milestone: Emily & Wilma"
Sherri Davis - Owner/Operator CozumelInsiderIt’s been an incredible late Summer and Fall Season here on the island and our peak hurricane risk months of August, September and October are passing us by without a hint of even a tropical storm! Actually up until just the past few days, we experienced virtually no storms and very little rain this year during what is known as the “rainy season” for us. That being said, I think the rain gods decided to get us caught up on rainfall this year by giving us downpours for the past 6 days! I think everything I own is wet right now! Ha ha!! But that’s how it goes living on a tropical island paradise ~ some days you just get wet!

The good news is that we have sunny skies once again in our forecast this week and as late as it’s getting now in October, we’re all very hopeful the hurricane season will end uneventfully for us. I would be remiss to let these days pass by without stopping to pause and remember them as the 10th Anniversary of Hurricanes EMILY and WILMA hitting the island in 2005. Cozumel received a direct hit from both of these Category 4 strength storms and, as it turns out, WILMA is still considered the biggest storm to ever pass through the Atlantic Ocean.

Take a moment if you will and visit the
webpages we created during and just after WILMA. It’s interesting to read our perspectives of the time and see all the photos. And then 1 year later the “Then & Now” Photos we published to demonstrate how far we had come in our recovery in just 1 year. We literally “felt the love” that year with millions of hits on this website and thousands of emails wishing us well and offering support.

While the residual effects of EMILY & WILMA are fading from memory, for those of us here who survived those storms they still serve as an important “mile marker” in time since the economic impact lingered for years. I personally am reminded daily of those events since I live surrounded by an area covered with jungle growth. From my third floor balcony it’s easy to look across the tree tops and find dozens of dead tree trunks that tower above the existing green foliage. Ten years later, the jungle still has not recovered to the height it was when EMILY & WILMA hit the island. But one day, we’ll get there and I’ll look across the jungle and see nothing but green!

We’re doing all the final “prep steps” before high season kicks off here in a few weeks and it’s time for you to do the same! So get online or speak with your travel agent and start making your plans now to visit Cozumel this Winter Season.
We’re here….ready for you to arrive!

Hey ~ I just wanted to follow up and say what a great time we had swimming with the whale sharks. I also wanted to commend our tour guide Cesar. He was very knowledgeable of the people, the land, the culture, and the history. I would highly recommend him to anybody wanting to tour Mexico.
Thanks again for all of your help, Matt Brosh ~ Austin, Texas

Had a great time liberating baby turtles ~ Will be back to do it again! D. Stachelski ~ Yorkville, Illinois

Thanks Sherri, we like to do business with people who care about what they are doing and not just out for money! R. McGough ~ U.S.A.

We just got back from Cozumel and the best thing we did was the Sea Turtle Release with FP&M. They were very educational and not just about the turtles. We were so excited to be able to hold the babies and set them free. Watching them bob their heads out of the water to breathe was quite a sight! Digging for them was enchanting, like finding buried treasure! Thanks to COZUMELINSIDER for helping us make this happen! Karen E. ~ Arroyo Grande, CA USA

Just returned from Cozumel where we participated in the FP&M Turtle Salvation program and it was the highlight of our trip. Our guides picked us up at our hotel right on time. They were very nice and one spoke fantastic English. Being able to participate in the extraction of newly hatched baby sea turtles from their nests and then watching them scurry into the ocean was so amazing. There were 4 nests hatching that evening so we were interacting with baby turtles for several hours. Those little turtles are SO adorable and so VERY determined to get to the water. This activity exceeded our expectations. I would recommend it to anyone who loves nature and wants to help this endangered species. It is awesome that donates its resources to handle the bookings for this activity to help raise funds for this great cause. Thanks for an awesome experience! T. Daily ~ Arizona
