A Personal Note from Sherri "Update - No Improvement for Us"

The crisp chill of Fall fills the air now as I watch the dew become vapor at sunrise on a mountainside somewhere in Mexico. The quiet of that instant when the full orb tops the horizon and begins to blaze the dawn of a new day always fills me with hope. The hope but not the reality of returning to my home and a life left behind in Cozumel.
I write this short note now simply to let everyone know that we are still safe and to let you know that Mauricio and I appreciate so very much everyone’s continued support and concern for us. We are certain your positive energy and prayers on our behalf have helped keep us from harm’s way. Your words of kindness lift our spirits every day and we can never thank you enough for taking the time to share with us.
I hope each of you had an incredibly memorable summer and a wonderful holiday weekend. I will provide more detail of all that we have done on our journey of this “Lost Summer” as soon as I can but for now, I leave my July posting here since essentially nothing has changed and I stand by my statements.

I deliberately refrained from posting anything new here for several weeks because I tried to remain optimistic and hopeful of being able to report good news to you eventually. But that has not come to pass. It has been over a month now since Mauricio and I were surrounded on Cozumel’s highway by unmarked vehicles, removed and hand cuffed by plain clothed thugs with guns and jailed on Federal charges somehow resurrected from dead archives put away long ago for “lack of evidence.”
Then just last week, as we were scheduled to appear at the Federal courthouse for one of the countless hearings on these bogus Federal charges, 12 STATE police showed up (along with a representative of Comer to identify us) to arrest us under the trespassing charges….where we will not be eligible for bail at all. This happened despite the existence of a protection order (amparo) we had in place where the Cozumel Criminal Judge (Rosaura Villanueva) was supposed to divulge in writing what the State charges against us were and to disclose if she was issuing a detention order for us. Even though she supposedly (by law) had just a couple of days to respond, she took over 3 weeks to answer and then delivered a statement dated 4 days earlier saying “at this time, there are no charges and no detention order.” (Of course charges and a detention order were created AFTER she wrote the Court ordered response….how convenient.) Now we struggle to not be jailed again under these additional false charges.
I had given Mr. Comer the benefit of the doubt earlier by saying that he probably wasn’t aware of what his agents were doing. But now, it is clear he is aware, approves of and continues to fund these efforts against us.
In addition, it can be said that Felix, Borge, Juan Carlos, Aurelio and Gustavo all know what is happening and have turned a blind eye to the gringa’s problems. These are all local and State politicians whose governments have directly benefited from my 12+ years of raising thousands of dollars in donations and recruiting hundreds of volunteers for their city run programs like Carnaval, the City Lifeguards and the Marine Turtle Program. It appears my paltry community service contributions are all meaningless in the face of a mega gazillionaire condo developer like Comer.
I wish I had better news to report but the fact is that we have been displaced from our Cozumel home and businesses for over a month now and we have no hope of returning since the minute we do, we will be arrested again under the trespassing charges that Comer and Villalobos refuse to dismiss

This sort of judicial EXTORTION is unacceptable for Cozumel investors, businesses and travelers.
It literally implies that a foreigner can have a simple “fender bender” and end up in jail being accused of attempted murder. Why or how? All it takes for this to happen is exactly what has happened to Mauricio and I: local police in collusion with a criminal judge and an unethical lawyer can all work together to EXTORT foreigners out of cash, property or whatever in exchange for NOT BEING CHARGED WITH A CRIME. Bail is not available to those charged with attempted murder so the poor guy who just had a fender bender will sit in a Mexican prision (like they are trying to do to us) for up to a year just waiting for his case to go before the judge….or else he will PAY THE EXTORTION which then gets divided up amongst those in collusion.
Please don't say this doesn’t happen in Cozumel ~ because it’s happening to us! I will continue to write about what is happening to us until its conclusion so that the depth and breadth of what occurs in Cozumel and Quintana Roo is known and understood by potential investors, retirees and travelers. They have a right to know the truth about where they are visiting.
As for those still wanting to help us in any way they can ~ thank you so very much for your support and stay tuned.

What a great Experience!!! We booked our excursions through this website with a slight bit of apprehension. We figured it would be safer to book through our cruise ship since this was our first time going to Cozumel. Boy am I so thankful we didn't. Our cruise ship (which we thoroughly enjoyed) had many excursions organized with tons of people in each excursion. By booking through INSIDER we were definitely given smaller groups to be with. We did the Atlantis Submarine excursion and we saved almost 100 dollars right there!!! We also booked a Resort Scuba with Eagle Ray Divers. We had 1-on-1 attention with Antonio (the owner), our own boat to go out on, and got personalized attention with the lesson/dive. I know if we had booked on the cruise ship there probably would've been many other people ...
Also, we originally booked a car rental for that Saturday morning. Jacqueline @ Cozumel Insider, called us at home prior to our cruise to inform us of some minor scheduling changes. She then suggested that the rental car may not be neccessary due to our number of excursions and our limited time. Due to her advice we cancelled our car rental which was the wise thing to do. This shows that this company has a lot of integrity and is not out there just to make a buck on the unsuspecting tourist. Next year we will definitely book through Cozumel Insider, we will recommend this company to all our friends, and we plan on booking with Antonio for more scuba next time!!!! My husband and I lived in Cozumel for just over 6 months and completly LOVED it! We spent most of our time on the other side of the Island where it is just a completely different world. I highly recommend Cozumel to anyone travelling to the Mayan Riviera. I know so many people who go to Cancun, but have never been to Cozumel even though it is only about 40 minutes away! Hey ~ I just wanted to follow up and say what a great time we had swimming with the whale sharks. I also wanted to commend our tour guide Cesar. He was very knowledgeable of the people, the land, the culture, and the history. I would highly recommend him to anybody wanting to tour Mexico.
