A Personal Note from Sherri "20 Year Milestone"
Sherri Davis - Owner/Operator CozumelInsiderThis past week marked a big milestone in Sherriís Great Island Adventure so I feel itís worth mentioning to you. It was 20 years ago this past week that I decided to make the journey from Dallas to Cozumel in a cute little beach buggy of a car: my 1992 GEO Tracker ~ Canary Yellow with Pink stripes and a soft top for taking off later to catch rays at the beach.

Having driven a 7 Series BMW for years in Dallas, I still fell in love with the GEO the minute I drove it off the lot back in 1994. Sitting way up high and bouncing down the highway care free was somehow more appealing to me at the moment than high performance. Being single it was difficult for me to justify owning 2 cars but I remember telling my parents that this GEO was the ultimate diver beach buggy that suited my new island life in Cozumel. I also recall them practically fainting as I told them I was going to DRIVE the GEO through Mexico and over to the island. I blamed it all on a guy named Mike Thompson who back then, was also from Dallas and living on the island. There were nothing but crappy rust buckets available for purchase in Cozumel back then along with stories of how ďit just couldnít be doneĒ ~ driving a car all the way from Texas to Cozumel. That alone was motivation for a Texas guy like Mike to make the trip. Mike bought an olive green jeep, loaded it up with beer (I would imagineÖfrom what I recall of the fine partying Mike!) and struck out on the journey from Dallas to Cozumel. He made it safely with beer to spare in about 5 days.

My parents were not impressed nor convinced by Mikeís Mexico travel adventure. But in their always loving way, they found it in their hearts to be as supportive as possible of my life adventures. I had walked a pretty safe path in my life up to that point and now it was as if I was making a road where there was none. My dad asked one of his friends, David Chavez to make the trip with me and keep his baby safe through the interior of Mexico where roads were sparse, signs non-existent and very few Mexicans who had ventured beyond the outskirts of their own pueblo to know which way to go to get to the Caribbean. You can read the rest of the story in my book of adventures some day but essentially David did all of the drinking and driving and I did all of the worrying and navigating via an ancient map that we ended up using as emergency toilet paper along the way.

So this is a big SALUTE AND HUG not only to Mike who blazed the trail from Dallas for the rest of us but also to David and my sweet yellow GEO that I still drive today here on the island! It had 17,500 miles on it as we arrived here to the island June 16, 1994 and right now it has 97,500 miles on it. So I guess you could say Iíve been driving in circles for 80,000 miles now! Itís really a good thing that GEO canít speak ~ my oh my what stories it could tell. LOL!!

And what an amazing GIRL car the GEO has been! I change the oil regularly, fill it up with gas and keep air in the tires and it simply never fails me! We can only wish for all other things in our lives to be so hassle free! Here are the THEN and NOW pics of my aging GEO with its original paint job and a few extra stickers on it! I'm a bit sentimental about it...?can you tell?!! Thatís David there too who helped ensure a most excellent beginning to Sherriís Great Island Adventure!

My family and I have returned to Cozumel many times - it's a favorite destination and we have watched it change over the past 20 years. The Cozumel Insider is a great publication - it's a wonderful way to keep up with the news about one of our favorite islands. We are preparing to visit again this August and the Insider has shown us some different activities to try, as well as helped to bring us up to date with local political and ecological happenings. We're delighted to see the interest in wildlife conservation throughout the area. Keep up the good work on this terrific site. D. McClean ~ unknown

Sherri and her staff did everything under the sun to help us get on one of their shore excursions. Phone calls and emails were promptly acknowledged and answered cheerfully and professionally. These are "home" folks; no need to worry about language or accents getting in the way of success. Book with confidence, and have fun! J Meyers ~ San Antonio, Texas

My husband and I lived in Cozumel for just over 6 months and completly LOVED it! We spent most of our time on the other side of the Island where it is just a completely different world. I highly recommend Cozumel to anyone travelling to the Mayan Riviera. I know so many people who go to Cancun, but have never been to Cozumel even though it is only about 40 minutes away! Take advantage of this beautiful Island!!! A. McIntosh ~ Toronto, Canada

We just got back from Cozumel last week and I'd like to thank you for answering all my questions and for setting us up on the Fury Snorkeling & Beach Party Tour and the van from Budget. This was the 4th time visiting the island and the 1st time that I didn't have the first bit of trouble with booking something online. Your service was great and I will be sure and book with you on my next trip. Thanks again! Danny Neal ~ Marshall TX

Thank you so much!!! Thank you for arranging the dolphin encounter for my family!!! Even in the aftermath of Hurricane Emily, Cozumel Insider came through with flying colors --- yall are perfect... A. Sikes ~ Frankston, TX USA
