Cozumel Marine Turtle Observation & Baby Liberation Events with FP&M
Thousands of sea turtles arrive to nest in Cozumel each year and there are at least two Marine Turtle Salvation Programs on the island that need your support and help with the conservation efforts of the island! Island volunteers along with visiting tourist volunteers have dedicated thousands of hours over the years to saving the sea trurtle population in Cozumel and now you can participate too!
During the nights of April through September, on the Eastern shore of Cozumel, two species of sea turtles come ashore to lay their eggs on the beach of Cozumel. The turtles, known as the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) and the green turtle (Chelonia mydas), generally lay from 100-150 eggs and can nest up to 6 times in one season.
Now Cozumel visitors are invited to join and support this important conservation program to save and protect these endangered species of turtles. Work side by side with brigade volunteers and get hands on experience with turtles making their nests, laying eggs as well as watch baby turtles making their way to the sea for the first time.
Tourists visiting Cozumel or those living here who would like to observe, learn and release baby turtles one night for 4 - 6 hours with a turtle brigade can do so during the sea turtle nesting season for a nominal donation per person from June 1 through November 15 annually.
NOTE: Requests are submitted to an approval process and are handled on first-come, first-serve basis. Please allow 1 week for a response.
