Spanish Learning Classes in Cozumel |
|
Vacationing in a foreign land is always exciting and can be a bit scary if English is not the first language of the country you are visiting and you don't know their language!! You could ask some one for a bathroom and get handed a banana instead! The ultimate barrier to remove when trying to learn and understand a different culture is language. Once you can communicate with some one in their homeland and in their language, the final curtain is raised and an entirely different and expanded cultural experience awaits.
When visiting Mexico, most tourist destinations now have a large bi-lingual Spanish/English population and one shouldn't expect to encounter many language barrier problems. However, being willing and able to some extent to communicate in Spanish is very helpful and also alot offun!
If you think you might be interested in learning Spanish before coming to Cozumel, why not visit your local book store and pick up an entry level "Learn the Basics" type of reference book? We also invite you to visit our online comprehensive guide to Basic Spanish Phrases - Cozumel Insider's Spanish Guide. With the bookstore reference text and the Basic Phrases link above as overviews of Spanish language fundementals, you might decide you want to take your learning further while here in Cozumel on vacation.
Learning Basic Spanish in Cozumel |
If you are interested in a cursory review of basic Spanish and how to pronounce various words/phrases, there is really no need to pay for a "course or class" to do this! Interestingly enough, because this is a tourist destination, there are many bi-lingual locals who would love to trade time with you and learn too!! They get to practice their English and ask questions while you do the same about Spanish! What a great way to meet new island friends too!! This is the most practical, economical and enjoyable way to see if Spanish is fun for you!
As a day visitor to Cozumel or and extended stay guest....
...just bring your reference book and a printout of the Basic Spanish Phrases guide along with you on your Cozumel vacation. Then visit your hotel lobby, a bar, a restaurant, your dive shop, etc. and ask around to see if there is some one who is interested in sharing this sort of experience with you. Chances are there is some one and the most it might cost you is a couple of tacos or something similar. This gives you the flexibility to spend as little or as much time learning Spanish as you like on your vacation here in Cozumel!
Now.....If you find learning Spanish exciting and challenging and you've tackled the basics and want to move up a notch, then you need a different level of Spanish speaking person to really teach you the fundementals over an extended stay. You need some one trained and skilled not only in speaking Spanish properly but in teaching as well. You will need a Spanish speaking, degreed educator with courses and learning materials designed for those wanting to develop their present knowledge for private, educational or professional reasons.

My husband and I recently returned from Cozumel. We stayed at IslaMar Villas, our second time there. Three years ago, it was our first time in Cozumel and we really liked this beautiful island. We were chatting with someone at the airport and they told us about connecting to a VRBO ... a short time after being home, we were checking out several VRBO's and came upon two that we liked and contacted both owners. The first one to respond would be the one we would go with ... and it turned out to be the best ...we stayed at IslaMar Villas in 2016; in fact, we just spent our 2017 holidays at IslaMar as well.
We enjoy Sherri and Mauricio and the people we have met at IslaMar Villas -- it is fun to meet new friends and so nice to be welcomed back by those from the year before. PalMar Beach Club is GREAT ... in fact, it is like your own private beach and we find the snorkeling to be the best. It is so gorgeous there; like paradise. The guys who work at PalMar are very helpful and the guacamole is so-o-o-o- good. Sherri always comes and visits with her guests. This time we went to the Butterfly Sanctuary ... a must see.
Also Carnival ... costumes, the parade, food, families. It is a grand time.
Sherri's hospitality is a plus. I would highly recommend your days in paradise to begin at IslaMar Villas and a hats off to Andrea who works hard and helps to make everyone's stay so enjoyable.

I loved staying here. The purpose of my three-week trip was to improve my Spanish and learn about Mexican culture. This was the perfect place to do it. IslaMar is in a decidedly non-tourist part of town, which means you're far more likely to glimpse the heart and soul of Mexico here than you would be at a beach resort. You'll also save a lot of money on food and rent. I felt quite safe exploring the neighborhood and making the 10-minute walk downtown. If you don't feel like walking, you can hail a cab and ride practically anywhere you want to go in town for under $5.
The owner, Sherri, and her assistant Martin answered all my questions before and during my trip. The on-site staff were beyond friendly, sweet, and helpful with my every need. I asked for a Spanish tutor; they researched candidates and found me a great one. She improved my skills a lot, for very little money, and she was a joy to know. I hope she and I will be friends for life.
The property itself was comfortable and well maintained, with high-quality finishes. I was able to cook well in the kitchenette. The staff will wash, dry, and fold a huge bag of laundry for a small fee, so it's easy to stay here for longer time periods despite packing light.
IslaMar will be my first choice for all future trips to Cozumel. C. Dooley ~ Dallas, TX USA

Hello: Sorry about all the calls and e-mails yesterday ~ it appears that we had a problem with yahoo email and receiving your confirmations. But I had your staff send the confirmations to my work e-mail and all is good. Your staff was very helpful, customer service friendly and courteous and I think your agency is great! My wife is a travel/booking agent and she agrees with me and plans to use your services in the future to book excursions for her clients. Thanks again and have a good day; Michael Weinberger ~ not given

We purchased a dive package with Dive Paradise through IslaMar and we were pleasantly surprised. The rooms were spacious and comfortable and the price was excellent with the dive package. The villas are a few blocks back from the main drag, but that's a good thing. The neighborhood is quiet, there is great authentic food in walking distance, and the cab ride to "Mega" was only 40 pesos ($2.50). Pay in pesos because it is cheaper. The exchange rate is 17:1 at the banks but 10:1 at a vendor. The staff was helpful although we weren't there much as we dove all day and were gone most of the time. The diving is EXCELLENT .. world class. If you haven't dove the reefs at Cozumel, what are you waiting for? :) Brigit B. & Reid S. ~ Norfolk, VA USA
