Vacationing in a foreign land is always exciting and can be a bit scary if English is not the first language of the country you are visiting and you don't know their language!! You could ask some one for a bathroom and get handed a banana instead!  The ultimate barrier to remove when trying to learn and understand a different culture is language. Once you can communicate with some one in their homeland and in their language, the final curtain is raised and an entirely different and expanded cultural experience awaits.
When visiting Mexico, most tourist destinations now have a large bi-lingual Spanish/English population and one shouldn't expect to encounter many language barrier problems. However, being willing and able to some extent to communicate in Spanish is very helpful and also alot offun!

If you are interested in a cursory review of basic Spanish and how to pronounce various words/phrases, there is really no need to pay for a "course or class" to do this! Interestingly enough, because this is a tourist destination, there are many bi-lingual locals who would love to trade time with you and learn too!! They get to practice their English and ask questions while you do the same about Spanish! What a great way to meet new island friends too!! This is the most practical, economical and enjoyable way to see if Spanish is fun for you!
As a day visitor to Cozumel or and extended stay guest....
 ...just bring your reference book and a printout of the Basic Spanish Phrases guide along with you on your Cozumel vacation. Then visit your hotel lobby, a bar, a restaurant, your dive shop, etc. and ask around to see if there is some one who is interested in sharing this sort of experience with you. Chances are there is some one and the most it might cost you is a couple of tacos or something similar. This gives you the flexibility to spend as little or as much time learning Spanish as you like on your vacation here in Cozumel!
Now.....If you find learning Spanish exciting and challenging and you've tackled the basics and want to move up a notch, then you need a different level of Spanish speaking person to really teach you the fundementals over an extended stay. You need some one trained and skilled not only in speaking Spanish properly but in teaching as well. You will need a Spanish speaking, degreed educator with courses and learning materials designed for those wanting to develop their present knowledge for private, educational or professional reasons.

Sherri and staff thank-you for an incredible experience living in one of your IslaMar Villa properties and enjoying the island more as a resident than tourist introduced us to side of Cozumel we really enjoyed, we only wish we hadn't taken so many years to vacation on Cozumel this way. The driver you hired us on the mainland was great I am very glad I didn't rent a car.
The island has made a wonderful recovery from the huricane and the diving was wonderful yes there is some reef damage but it is already making a comback and the fish life (Eagle Rays, turtles and more) seems more abundant than ever.

We will be leaving tommorrow for 2 week stay at Islamar villas and diving with Dive Paradise. All of this along with a car rental was booked through you guys. Not only did you have a professional attitude through all the e-mails in booking the original dates but at the last minute I extended my stay. You and your staff were especially kind through all of this. You got the car extended and went way out of your way to make sure everything was taken care of, not to mention letting me borrow your personal roller bag to go to the market. My husband and I lived in Cozumel for just over 6 months and completly LOVED it! We spent most of our time on the other side of the Island where it is just a completely different world. I highly recommend Cozumel to anyone travelling to the Mayan Riviera. I know so many people who go to Cancun, but have never been to Cozumel even though it is only about 40 minutes away!
