"Do It Yourself" Snorkel Tour |
 |
Cozumel is an island just big enough to be an adventure but not so large that one feels intimidated going it alone to explore. Since Cozumel is ranked in the top three as a world class diving destination, one simply has to put their face in the water to understand why.
If you'd like to consider getting certified to scuba dive then click here to learn more about diving in Cozumel. The good news is that a person does not have to know how to scuba dive in order to enjoy the exciting underwater beauty Cozumel has to offer.
It simply stands to reason that as a world class dive destination ~ Cozumel snorkeling has to be great too!
What better way to explore the beauty of Cozumel's spectacular reefs and colorful tropical fish than by snorkeling. One can easily snorkel via a boat trip (click here for Our Favorite Boat Snorkel Trips) and luckily from shore as well.
Cozumel's shorelines gently slope toward deeper waters and provide miles of beautiful snorkeling just a couple of steps from the waters edge. With a simple set of mask, snorkel and fins a person can immediately enjoy the colorful underwater realm just a few yards off shore!
Snorkel Stops:
#1 Playa Calatita
#2 Playa Villa Blanca
#3 Playa Bella Vista & Sunset Beach
#4 Marina Caleta Playa & Paradise Reef
#5 PalMar Estate and Dzul Ha
#6 Butterfly Sanctuary Pit Stop
#7 Playa Uvas
#8 Playa Corona
Step 1: Get Equipped!! Decide if you want to invest in your own set of snorkel gear or if you simply prefer to rent snorkel equipment while here on the island. A decent set of snorkel equipment which consists of mask, snorkel and fins can easily be purchased for US$30 - $50 in the USA. Do NOT try to purchase equipment here on the island since everything is imported, prices will be higher. Snorkel equipment rental prices range US$8 -$12 daily. So make your decision based on how much you plan to snorkel!
Also, decide if you feel you need to invest in a flotation device to assist you while snorkeling. Some feel most comfortable with the self inflatable snorkel vests. These are available for purchase in the US for US$ 30 - $50 each. Rental prices for snorkel vests run US$ 8-10.
Step 2: Book a rental car now ... Since Cozumel has few paved roads around the island, you can rent a car and strike out on your own island tour with very little chance of getting lost. As long as adventurers stay on the pavement, they eventually come full circle around the island. Circling the island via paved road can take as little as 2 hours or as many as you want depending on how many stops you decide to make along the way!
Step 3: Print the Beach Chart & this section about Cozumel's best snorkel spots!
Step 4: Secure an island map. You can secure an island map from the car rental agency or you can order online Franko's Cozumel Map
Step 5: Have fun & enjoy your day in Cozumel!!

Sherri ~ I just wanted to pass along a huge THANK YOU for the dolphin excursion I booked through you in Cozumel for last Wednesday. The experience was something I will remember for a lifetime. Besides my friend and myself, there were only two other participants in our group so the dolphin trainer gave us extra time in the water. GREAT PICTURES were taken of the whole experience!!!!!!! Actually, a few people I spoke to when I got back on the cruise ship booked their excursion through Carnival directly and paid more $$$$ for less time in the water with the dolphins ( no swim, push off, etc). Again, thank you for everything....... D Garrett ~ not given

Ladies --- I just wanted to thank you so much for helping us with the island tour and the sea trek helment diving ------- both were awesome!
Our tour guide was Humberto ----- great guy --- he sang for us !!!!!!!! He has been to Nashville, TN before ---- he was so knowledgable and so nice. We ran a little late for the sea trek ---- but they took us right in. They too were great -- that was one of the coolest water activities we have ever done. Yes --- we bought the video and pictures ------ we just loved it. Did not have time to snorkel with Mario -- we feard we'd miss the ship ----- but we did not --- taxi took us quickly to the ship as soon as the sea trek was over. I don't know a lot of travelers -- but I would recommend anybody using Yaxkin as a tour company --- as well as the guys at Sea Trek. You ladies were great ---- Thanks again !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We spent a day @ your club while our ship was in port. What a wise choice ! The snorkeling was fantastic and your club was staffed by the warmest, kindest people that we met in Cozumel. Juan, his father and your other staff made us feel comfortable and welcome . The food was delicious, the drinks great and the prices very reasonable. Juan almost sold us another stay right then and there. We will be back and have already posted our review on the web. Muchos Gracias ! V. Perry ~ Danbury, CT

We had a fantastic time - what an adventure! Your on-site staff were great and our group thoroughly enjoyed our Helmet Dive. We explored the Chankanaab Park, snorkeled in the beautiful water, and "toasted" ourselves with Nachos and cold beers - a wonderful afternoon. Thanks for a super experience! J. Moon ~ Carson City, NV
