| Photos from Carnaval 2012 - Candidates for King & Queen "In Costume" |
The pre-Carnaval 2012 activities continued this past weekend as enthusiastic candidates made their first presentations of themselves "in costume" to the community and thousands of eager Carnavaleros. Each candidate is vying for votes as the island prepares to elect the official King and Queen of Carnaval as well as King and Queen of Alegria and Fantasia this next week. This evening will close with the determination of who serves as Juvenile King and Queen of Carnaval for 2012.
Late Saturday, with a sell-out, standing room only crowd of Carnavaleros at Moby Dick, the Cozumel Carnaval Ballet breezed across the dance floor performing their opening number of the show. The Carnaval Ballet excited the crowd with their performance in order to present the 2012 Carnaval Host Mr. Spectacular himself ~ Fernando Ferraez who danced around the ballroom floor welcoming many Carnavaleros by name and creating the festive tempo of the evening.
Ferraez began the evening's feature activities by welcoming the Presidente Aurelio Joaquín González and his wife, the First Lady of Cozumel Maria Luisa. After a warm greeting from the crowd for the dignataries, Ferraez next invited the King and Queen of Carnaval 2011 to each perform their farewell dances before the crowd. Next the candidates for Juvenile King and Queen of Carnaval made their performances with each vying for the votes of the thousands of Carnavaleros in attendance tonight.
Carnaval 2011 King Nando Morejon took the stage first to perform and then make his farewell comments. Nando made his closing remarks and said his goodbyes to the crowd of Carnavaleros and was then followed by Carnaval 2011 Queen Zaida Elimar and her dance troupe. As Zaida closed her farewell remarks, Ferraez thanked both Nando and Zaida for a "job well done" this past year and recognized the rest of last year's Royal Court before beginning the 2012 King & Queen Candidates "In Costume" Show.
Ferraez then introduced each candidate for Cozumel Carnaval King and Queen and each candidate then made their "full costume" presentation in front of the crowd. Queen candidates Karla, Marcela and Diana as well as the King of Carnaval candidates Andres, Sergio and Juan each made their own individual costume presentation/dance interpretation in their enormous costumes which lasted 15 - 20 minutes.
Since voting for the Juvenile King and Queen had come to a close, votes were tallied and congratulations were in order for María Antonieta “Tony” Cuevas Torres, and Leandro Noe May Uc or “Mayiciento” as they won the vote and were elected Juvenile King and Queen of Carnaval 2012. They will become part of the 2012 Royal Court at crowning ceremonies that kick off Caranaval week activities (see program for schedule of events).
As usual, the colorful and imaginative presentations were exciting to see as Carnaval 2012 shapes up to be a great competition for votes and then a top notch celebration for the week of February 18 - 25 when the candidates will reign over the festivities!
Event Host Fernando Ferraez closed the evening's events with another call for everyone to become "Carnavaleros" and participate in Carnaval 2012 to help make it the most exciting ever as he encouraged all of the community to get involved this next week to VOTE for the King and Queen of their choice for Carnaval! The exuberant crowd of thousands of Carnavaleros then rose in applause and rushed the dance floor as they began dancing to the rhythm of the music until dawn.
?Did you see ME there? Hope so!!
