Photos from Carnaval 2007 - Introduction of King & Queen Candidates
Excitement exploded on the island this weekend as the Pre-Carnaval 2007 activities officially got underway to elect the official King and Queen of Carnaval as well as the King and Queen of Alegria. Returning once again to the large outdoor auditorium of Moby Dick under this year’s theme of “Lights, Camera, Action!” the host for Carnaval 2007, Memo Lara, spoke to a sell out crowd welcoming everyone and encouraging all to participate in this year’s festivities as Carnavaleros!

Before announcing this year’s candidates for King and Queen of Carnaval 2007, Memo welcomed the King and Queen of Carnaval 2006 and recognized Cozumel’s Presidente Gustavo Ortega Joaquín as well as a representative of the State Governor’s office attending on behalf of Quintana Roo’s Governor Felix Canto (former Presidente of Cozumel). Gustavo spoke to the animated crowd of Carnavaleros thanking the Committee for their hardwork in organizing the activities and sharing his life long enthusiasm for Carnaval. Gustavo closed his remarks by saying that he hopes Carnaval 2007 will be the best in the island’s history.

After a boisterous round of applause from the excited crowd, Sr. Memo began by introducing the 3 lovely candidates who have stepped forward this year to compete for the title of Queen of Carnaval 2007! Queen candidates this year are Helen Ayerim Gutierrez Puerto, Manuela de los Angeles Lopez Meza and Karla Peniche Hernandez.

All three Queen candidates were born and raised on the island and each spoke a few words to the crowd about their desire to be Cozumel’s Queen of Carnaval 2007. After these introductions and speeches from each candidate as to why they should be selected as Queen, Memo then announced the handsome candidates for King of Carnaval 2007 which are Marcos Villanueva Court, Francisco Javier Perera Lopez and Jesus Manuel Acosta Pacheco. As with the Queen candidates, all 3 King candidates were born and raised in Cozumel and each was given the opportunity to address the crowd and explain why they wanted to be Cozumel’s King of Carnaval 2007.

All of the candidates assured the crowd that if elected they would work for Cozumel to ensure Carnaval 2007 is the best ever in accordance with the Presidente’s wishes! The candidates then all danced around the stage together as they encouraged the crowd to participate with applause. Afterward all the candidates returned to the stage and called for "Carnavaleros" of the community to get involved this year like never before.

The Event Host Memo then closed the evening's events with another call for everyone to become "Carnavaleros" and participate in Carnaval 2007 to help make it the most exciting in Cozumel history! He then introduced the world famous Wilfrido Varga Orchestra & Band to the anxious and excited sell-out crowd of Carnavaleros who enthusiastically began the Carnaval 2007 season by dancing until 4am.
