With one of the closest votes ever in the King/Queen competitions, a very exciting evening of Candidate dance shows finally ended at 4:30am Sunday morning with the election of Cozumel's Royal Court for Carnaval 2007. The colorful and boisterous Memo served as Master of Ceremonies for the evening and after 4+ hours of competition, the voting began to elect the King and Queen of Carnaval 2007, the King and Queen of Allegria 2007 and the King and Queen of Fantasia 2007.
The campaign of the candidates for King and Queen of Cozumel Carnaval 2007 was intense, enthusiastic and filled with brilliant colors. Things got underway around 11pm Saturday evening as the Carnaval Ballet dance troup warmed up the crowd with an opening number from their energetic floor show. An exuberant lone dancer with a swirling metallic ribbon prop then presented our Master of Ceremonies Memo Laura who emerged in costume as a Carnaval Jester.
Memo advised the crowd of Carnavaleros that the entire event was being broadcast LIVE locally on Channel 21 and that the Governor of Quintana Roo was in attendance. The Governor (Felix Canto former Cozumel Presidente) then addressed the crowd of 4000+ and spoke of his own personal history as a Cozumel Carnavalero. Before he could finish his remarks, the crowd showed their fondness of Felix with a lengthy standing ovation. The 2006 King and Queen said their good-byes to the Carnavaleros and Memo then reigned in the crowd to prepare them for the candidate shows. Memo was elevating the tension and exciting the crowd with calls for support from each candidate's contingency of supporters who were on hand to watch the elaborate performances and to cast their votes later in the evening. All of the supporters came equipped with giant noise makers to use in support of their candidate so as Memo called each candidate’s name, the roar of the crowd was punctuated with air horns, rattling cans filled with beans, and clacking wood spinners. With all this noise, nerves were jittery as each candidate and comparsa waited for their turn to perform.
This year, all 3 Queen candidates performed in succession and then the 3 King candidates followed with their performances. Each of the 6 candidates had a colorful and lively dance show presentations which lasted 40 minutes or more and contained at least 100 dancers! Each candidate show culminated with the candidate coming out for a final dance in their biggest, most spectacular costume for Carnaval 2007.
Around 3:00am votes began to be cast to see who would be the King and Queen of Carnaval 2007!! As the vote was conducted and counted Carnavaleros danced to the band “Santa Cecila.” No one wanted to leave until the new King and Queen were announced but this turned out to be a considerable wait as the vote for King was very close and had to be re-tabulated to confirm the 10 vote separation. In the end, it's not really about who wins ~ because ALL of the candidates are crowned as part of the Royal Court. It's more about bringing many elements of the community together in the process of performing and creating entertainment for this very special time of year here in Cozumel. All candidates will serve very important roles in the celebration of Carnaval!
Cozumel elected Jesus (Meco) and Karla as their King and Queen of Carnaval 2007 while Manuela and Marcos were voted King/Queen of Alegria and Helen and Francisco as King/Queen of Fantasia.
The newly elected Royal Court of Carnaval 2007 will be crowned in official Coronation ceremonies which will be held Tuesday February 13th at 7pm in the Plaza Downtown. Everyone is looking forward to great festivities next week
