| Photos from Carnaval 2007 - Candidates for King & Queen "In Costume" |
The pre-Carnaval 2007 activities continued this weekend as enthusiastic candidates made their first presentations of themselves "in costume" to the community. Each candidate is vying for votes as the island prepares to elect the official King and Queen of Carnaval as well as King and Queen of Alegria and Fantasia this next week.
Late Saturday, with a sell-out crowd of over 2000 people at Moby Dick, two dancers using fireballs on ropes excited the crowd with their performance in order to present the 2007 Carnaval Host Memo ~ “El Mero Mero Carnavalero” who emerged in costume as Taurus and danced around the ballroom floor welcoming many Carnavaleros by name and creating the festive tempo of the evening.
After the fire show and Memo’s introduction, the Carnaval Ballet performed the opening number for this grand evening of entertainment. The Carnaval Ballet, under the guidance of the ballet dancer and choreographer Pedro Pérez Bacab, is a group comprised of young adults who do perform throughout the year at many events in order to bring attention to the youth of Cozumel. Dancing to music inspired by Cozumel initially and then transitioning to mambo, the young dancers completed a very professional show.
Memo began the evening’s feature activities by welcoming the King and Queen of Carnaval 2006 to perform their farewell dances before the crowd. King Manuel Jose Alcocer Angulo (“Gato”) took the stage first to perform and make his farewell comments. Gato’s 20 minute dance performance with his dance group was an adaptation of the musical “Cats.” Gato made his closing remarks and said his goodbyes to the crowd of Carnavaleros and was then followed by Queen Leslie Fabiola Perez Gaeta and her dance troupe. Leslie’s dancers were children mimicking butterflies and then she closed her show with an incredible couples salsa dance featuring her favorite dance partner the incredible Pedro Bacab (Carnaval 2005 King). All through these presentations, videos were showing Leslie’s favorite moments of her year as Queen on the large overhead screens. As Leslie made her farewell remarks, Memo thanked both Gato and Leslie for a "job well done" this past year before beginning the 2007 King & Queen Candidates "In Costume" Show.
Memo then introduced each candidate for King and Queen and each candidate then made their "full costume" presentation in front of the crowd. Queen candidates Helen, Manuela and Karla as well as the King of Carnaval candidates Marco, Jesus and Francisco each made their own individual costume presentation/dance interpretation which lasted 15 - 20 minutes each.
Helen Ayerim Gutiérrez Puerto was the first Queen candidate and she emerged in costume as “Queen of Snow” and protector of the polar bears. She wore a beautiful rose colored dress and adorned herself with a spectacular trellis backdrop of peacock feathers and sequins of more than 12 ft. diameter.
Personifying the “ Queen of Fairies,” the second Queen candidate Karla Peniche Hernández , stated her goal of filling this year’s Carnaval with happiness and fun. Her elegant, solid white costume was comprised completely of iridescent sequins and floating organza. Her halfmoon trellis backdrop featured clouds of long, soft white feathers with silver metallic trim.
The third candidate, Manuela de los Ángeles López Meza, emerged personifying “Acasha” the goddess of the condemned. Her very elablorate costume was covered in sequins and beads in ocher, goldtones and brown while her triangular shaped trellis backdrop featured huge tufts of long straight feathers flowing in all directions.
After Manuela, the King candidates began their presentations. The first King candidate, Francisco Javier Perera López, wore an exotic and colorful costume honoring the Aztec emperor Moctezuma. Francisco carried a feathered staff and danced to the hypnotic beat of pre-Hispanic music performed live by the well known local musical group “Tonameyotzin.” Tonameyotzin’s emotional percussion performance mesmerized the crowd of Carnavaleros as Francisco exited the stage with strong applause.
The second King candidate of the night was Jesús Manuel Acosta Pacheco, took the stage as “Scorpion King.” His costume of metallic gold, bright orange and black was accented by what turned out to be the largest trellis backdrop of any of the candidates. The 16+ ft diameter full circle backdrop was metallic and orange/brown and featured black feathers all the way around.
The final King candidate was Marcos Villanueva Court, who emerged in an ocean theme and came to life as “Octopus” master of the reefs. His costume was completely covered with deep purple beads and sequins and accented with silver and featured a half moon trellis backdrop.
As usual, the colorful and imaginative presentations were exciting to see as Carnaval 2007 shapes up to be a great competition for votes and then a top notch celebration for the week of February 14-21 when the candidates will reign over the festivities!
Event Host Memo closed the evening's events with another call for everyone to become "Carnavaleros" and participate in Carnaval 2007 to help make it the most exciting ever as he encouraged all of the community to get involved this next week to VOTE for the King and Queen of their choice for Carnaval!
The exuberant crowd of Carnavaleros rose and began dancing to the rhythm of “Cozumel Band” until dawn.
