Island Sites/San Gervasio Mayan Ruins |
 |
After meeting the driver/guide, participants will go to the San Gervasio Mayan Ruins site for a guided tour. While not as impressive in size as Tulum or Chichen Itza, San Gervasio played a vital, significant role in the lives of all Mayan women for thousands of years. The guided overview tour will provide a sense of the Mayan culture and history.
San Gervasio was once the island's capital dedicated to the goddess Ix Chel who was the wife of Itzamma, the Mayan God above all. The pilgrims and traders would reach the famous sanctuary of the Goddess and deposit an offering at the altar that lies in the middle of the vaulted passageway.
The history of San Gervasio dates back to 300-400 AD. During the period of 1000 - 1200 AD, the Itzas dominated Cozumel, from which point they controlled the trade between Yucatan and the region. Archaeological evidence exists which indicates that the urban settlement model of San Gervasio was copied from the capital of the Itza with its plazas connected by Sacbe (white roads built by the Maya) like at Chichen Itza, and pottery notably influenced by this culture.
After touring the ruins, guests will then go to el Mirador on the other side of the island for some splendid photo opportunities and then return for lunch at a local restaurant before heading back to town.
Longtime Cozumel residents Richard and Gail Ralston take pride in offering visitors a more natural view of the island. With experienced, bi-lingual guides focusing on flora, fauna and history of the island these tours offer adventure, education and fun for all ages! |
